January 6, 2021

Watching the news religiously since Donald In the morning I made my tea, and turned on the television to watch the news on MSNBC.

I knew this was going to be a bad day from the beginning and was apprehensive about the outcome in congress, as they formally counted the votes of the recent presidential election, in which Joe Biden was declared the winner. The entire procedure was a formality that put the seal on the elections results.

Trump became a nominee for president in 2016 may be considered obsessive, however I felt compelled. Four years of life with Trump as president was enough to make anyone stressed. The recent “Big Trump Lie” was that the democrats stole the presidency. Trump pushed this lie in the media. Millions of Trump supporters believed the “Big Lie”. This was dangerous.

While sipping my tea, I was watching congress starting the procedure in the chamber. The senate majority leader, Moscow Mitch, Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives, Chuck Shumer, and majority leader for the House of Representatives were leading the procedure. A full house of elected officials filled the chamber.

Suddenly, the news switched to an angry crowd outside of the White House waiting for Trump to start his mega rally. Trump and his political allies enticed the crowd with accusations that they should “Stop the Steal”, a slogan for Trump supporters, which referred to the propaganda perpetuated by Trump that the election was stolen. The last thing I remember was Trump telling his supporters to take back their country and march to the capitol. He told his supporters that Vice President Pence was a traitor for signing off on the validation of our recent election.

The size of the crowd around the capitol was in the thousands. It was evident my instincts were correct. For a long time Trump has been feeding false information to his cult like supporters. Violence was inevitable.

Next the screen shows what is happening in the chamber. Suddenly, I see the leaders of congress being led quickly out of the room through a side door. News reporting states they were told to evacuate because of danger from the crowd starting to breech the capitol.

I was stunned that this could even happen. How could a mob breech the security of the capitol? I though the capitols security could not be breached. It seemed today security was lacking. I immediately became suspicious and blamed Trump for the obvious issues with lack of security for this historic day.

MSNBC did an amazing job of covering what was to become coup. Next  thing I saw a Man walking through the main capitol rotunda. Immediately, afterwards I saw multiple angry Trump supporters just walking along with their confederate flags looking around at the paintings and statues. My reaction was to be confused about how this could be happening. My next thing I felt was disgust.

The scene switched back to congress. Representatives showed fear as the floor was cleared, however in the balcony representatives were told to stay in place until they could be removed to safety. Next they were told to put on gas masks and to stay on the floor.

After seeing this, I became seriously alarmed for the wellbeing of our congress and their mission to count and validate the election vote. The box with the votes were quickly removed and placed in a secure place.

The news scene changes back and forth between the mob outside and the congressional chambers. It seemed surreal, yet not unexpected. I watched all day as the violent Trump mob fought police and were able to breech the capitol. As the crowd grew larger, they became increasingly violent.

Chants to hang Vice President Pence and kill Pelosi were heard. I was now fearful for everyone in that building. These people actually believe they are fighting to take back their country and that the election was stolen. Trump would rather die then concede the presidency, just like any egotistical tyrant.

After hours of watching the coup on our democratic government, something I thought wasn’t possible in America, I heard the news the national guard was finally deployed and had cleared the capitol building. I welcomed relief after so much tension. I felt even more relief when our congressional leaders stayed to finish the electoral vote counting and validation. It was around four a.m. in the morning of the next day the procedure was completed for all of the voters in America.

I have witnessed the first coup in the United States of America.

It is clear these people want an autocratic nation of only white citizens. I wonder if our country can sustain our democracy were everyone should respect each other’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
